Here is another anecdote sent in to me – keep them coming!!

Geoff Chandler

At the Edinburgh Congress held in the Assembly Rooms round about 1982/83 and was the same tournament where Phil Condie lost two games in one round. (see C.C. Enid Blyton & Anecdotes).

All the top players (and me) were playing in the very plush ballroom.

The junior tournament was in the bowels of the building and the junior
organiser, Harry Leask, asked the top controller (I think it was Raymond Baxter) if the kids could see the stronger players in action.

Raymond agreed and warned us all there would be kids all over the place for the first 10 minutes of the round.

I'm getting up to have a fag (I never smoked at the board if my opponent was a non smoker; I was playing Helen 'Nellie' Milligan. ˝-˝.  I was getting beat but Helen fancied me in those days so agreed a draw.)

Anyway...

The kids are trooping past having watched the stronger players in action.
I caught this fantastic conversation.

"None of them are going for the Schoolboy mate." stated one bright eyed lad.

"No you Ninny." replied his pal. "That is because they have clocks. The game MUST last 36 moves."
