Dundee and Angus Chess Congress 2007

Keith Rose, Congress Director

The Dundee & Angus Chess Congress was held at Next Generation Club, Monifieth from 19th to 21st October.

There were 35 junior players out of 130 players overall in the senior tournament, 12 of whom won prizes. The entry for the Primary tournament was disappointing with only 6 in the Saturday Primary and 8 in the Sunday Primary. However, they did seem to enjoy their weekend, maybe because they could play a lot of pool in between games!

In addition to the main prizes three additional prizes were given to the Congress to present to junior players. This was a type of chess played on a differently shaped board. One went to the youngest player in the senior tournaments (Robert Childs), one went to the highest placed junior in the Major (Ali Roy) and the third went to the junior nearest to Runner-Up (Finlay Dick). It would be interesting to hear how these three players get on with the games.

As was the case last year the Primary tournaments were played in the main hall and again the players conducted themselves very well with no noise or disturbance.

In the Open 10 out of 37 were juniors who produced several outstanding results - Blair Hawthorne (1668) beat Hugh Brechin (2003) and Ian Robertson (2061); Julius Schwartz (1670) beat David Vincenti (2053); Rhian Hughes (1684) beat Richard Birkett (2042).

The Challengers only had three juniors and none were among the main prize winners. Jamie Hookham won the Junior prize - a one-in-three chance!

The outstanding result for a junior was Ali Roy’s first equal place in the Major with 4½ points. This gave Ali a tournament rating of 1784, a difference of +381. There were 10 junior entries in this tournament.

There was another fine performance in the Minor with Scott Browning sharing first place though he did start near the top of the gradings. Finlay Dick, graded 200 points below Scott, finished just behind in third place.

Kiron Roy claimed the Giant Killer prize with a win over a grading difference of 428 points.
