Chess for Kicks Dundee

Alana Stewart, P7

On the 13th of November, I went to Dundee football ground to play in a chess tournament.  My dad took me and it only took us 25 minutes on a bus.  When we got there we had to sit in our seats to wait for the first round to start.  The person I played beat me, he was a good player, so I never got a point that round and he did.

I played a couple of friendly games while I was waiting for the second round to start.  The second round started and I lost that round too.  I wasn’t upset because I still had three rounds to play, so I thought that was OK.  Sandi, Erin, my dad, and I all played chess in between the rounds , I got together with my dad, Erin and Sandi played as a pair, but there was no time to finish the game.

The third round came and I won it, I was happy and my dad bought me a burger.  At lunch time I had a big lunch, I couldn’t really manager it all.  I played a graded person in the forth round and I got beat, she was good, she captured my queen and I could have got hers, but I didn’t see it.

It wasn’t long until the fifth round and it was near the end of the tournament so this was the chance to get one more point. I got another point and that was two I had.  The boy I played in the fifth round said he would beat me because he was graded over 300, but it was the other way round, I beat him and it felt good.  After that it was prize giving and the Arbiter said there is only prizes for the people that have 2½ or more.  I never had that much but I didn’t mind.  I picked up an entry form to go to Hampden to play in a tournament that was cool.  So we went home and that was the end of a great day.

On Sunday 13th November I went to a chess tournament with my friends Alana and Sandi.  The first round was at 10:30am.  In the first round I was playing someone with a grade of 545 and I haven’t even got a grade.  It was a challenge and I took in onboard.  All 3 of us lost our first round.  Never mind, we were just getting started.  Round 2 looked easy, I was playing a primary 4, but was it easy?  I was thinking I was going to win this one because I had taken both knights, bishops and his queen but he got a pawn to the other side and when his time and nearly run out he moved both his rook and his queen and checkmated me.  Unfortunately, none of us had won this round either.  After lunch we played 3 more rounds.  I won none of mine, Sandi won one of hers and Alana won 2 of hers.  It was really fun even if I did get no points in the end.

Thank you to chess teachers Miss Watt and Mrs Officer for coming along to watch us and many thanks to Amy Officer for coming along to give us a few pointers and for helping us.
