British
Chess Championships
Great Yarmouth, 2007
A large contingent of
Scottish players traveled down to Great Yarmouth for the British Chess
Championships in August 2007. The
event was held in the Great Yarmouth college over two weeks. Some glorious weather, some brilliant company
and some inspired chess made this a very enjoyable event.
Some important successes…
Jacob Aagaard became the fifth Scot to hold the title of
British Chess Champion with a score of 8.5/11, he also
gained the grade of 2500 necessary to claim his GM title, a very good
tournament for Jacob!
Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant
retained her British Women’s title and scored 7/11 putting her in 8th place
overall.
Jonathan Rowson finished in second place with 8/11 – half a point
behind the winner.
Calum MacQueen
once again won the U16 British title unbeaten on 5.5/7.
Connor Woods (in the
same section as Calum) claimed the U15 British title,
again unbeaten on 5.5/7.
Ali Roy shared the U12
Girls’ title with Welsh internationalist Megan Owens (click here for
more on Ali’s win).
Matthew Thomas won the
Junior Open Week 1 and came 2nd in the Junior Open Week 2.
Charlotte Childs won the
Junior Open Week 2.
Andy Howie
won the U100 (translates to Scottish U1400).
Robbie Coleman got a
grading prize in the Major Open on 6.5/11.
