Trinations Tournament 2006 – U/16 Report
Andrew Green (U/16
Captain)
On the 8th
of September 2006 the U/16 team arrived at Haven Holidays Craig Tara. The
line up this year was Captain Green, Super-size me MacQueen,
Notorious Nisbet, Barbaric Blair, Awesome Adam and
the Full Monty. We had a lot to live up too as we were defending champions
and Scotland
has yet to not win the under 16 title. Upon arrival we met our chaperones and
were given a speech by Dangerous Donna. We were given the normal talk about
representing our country and also told our curfews.
After all the
formalities the squad got to explore the venue. It was interesting. There was
a lot of puggy, pool, and food places to go to. We
got a cosy caravan each with our very own chaperone. Many of the players
played poker and once that was over the squad returned to their caravan with
high spirits.
Next day the
squad after a filling breakfast got ready to play the deadly Scottish filler
team. The Scottish filler team was not a team I was particularly looking
forward to with the strong lunging weegie Coleman
and cheeky chess Oswald who were part of some of the strongest Trination’s teams there ever have been.
Somewhat
surprisingly the under 16 team beat the filler team 6-0. It certainly was an
unpredictable result half way through the match. Awesome Adam pulled off a
very nice swindle, Full Monty managed to win the worst position without
material disadvantage I had ever seen and Super-size me MacQueen
winning a pawn down.
After a filling
lunch the squad then got prepared to play Wales. I thought this match was
going to be a lot easier but it was not. We drew 3-3 and barely achieved
that. Noticeable performances were from Barbaric Blair who showed us his
sensitive side with some very nice endgame technique and Super-size me MacQueen winning an awful position. Really though we
decided that this year we would show off a bit and make it seem close. The
winner would now all depend on whoever beat Ireland by the larger margin. Wales beat Ireland 4.5-1.5 so we needed at
least 5 points to defend our title.
Tired of chess
the squad moved onto football instead in the evening. I can say that this was
the most violent game of football I have ever played. With rather nasty
tackles from both sides I believe that Wales probably came off worst in
the end. Noticeable performances on the footy pitch were Win-a lot Widzy and veteran player Lloyd Hughes. With sore bodies
the team retired to their caravans for some sleep and got prepared to give
the Irish a good hiding.
Next day the
squad were ready to take on Irish. The team cruised to a 6-0 victory with
somewhat ease to secure the title. It has to be said that this Irish team was
a lot weaker than normal and was scrapped together at the last minute.
The event was
fantastic as always and very enjoyable. However it would not have been
enjoyable if it weren’t for several people. I would like to thank Anne and
Jacob for chaperoning the caravans. Alex and Lara for being awesome arbiters
by making sure no one cheated though the Irish really should have tried. Also
like to thank Norrie and Maureen, who were
fantastic chaperones and also provided their normal quality entertainment, to
our Chess Scotland president Donald Wilson for presenting the awards.
Finally I would
like to thank Dangerous Donna for being our manger the last time. She has
done a great amount for Chess Scotland my personal favourite was her
introduction of the certificates. Thank you Donna for your service it was
unforgettable. She is passing the torch onto Jacob who I am sure will be a
great junior director.
