BWCA National Girls’ Championship and Women’s Rapidplay
On the 9th
and 10th of February, Morven Petrie, Amy
Officer and Alice Lampard went down to York to play
in the BWCA (British women chess
association) National Girls Championships.
We were the only
three from Scotland
and we all did well.
Amy was given
the title of British Women’s Rapid Play Champion, shared with Sarah Hegarty, & under 16 Champion.
Morven finished in 3rd place in the
under 11s.
I got 2nd
place in the under 12. I finished on 3 ½ out of 6.
In the first round
I played Evie Hollingworth
with a grade of 97 and lost on time but with a very equal position.
The second round
I had a Bye so was able to take advantage of the coaching from WGM Jovanka Houska & WFM
Sabrina Chevannes.
Round 3 I played
Isobel Cotogni Graded 71 and got a nice win.
Sunday and Round
4 saw me play Abigail Pritchard ,the top graded player in the under 14,
determined not to lose on time again .I played a little quicker and we agreed
a draw after a long close game.
Round 5 turned
out to be the decider for the under 12 against Jennifer Ehr
graded 71. I lost with 2 minutes on the clock when Jennifer managed to queen
a pawn after 70 moves.
In the final
round I played the ungraded Tansy Tomlinson and
after winning had to watch and see if Evie & Abigail
both won; I would get second.
At the same time
as all of this, there was a friendly tournament for any accompanying family
and friends. Craig Petrie got second place in that competition.
Well done the
Scots!!
By Alice Lampard.
